About the Artist
Leo Frilot produces various wood products in exotic and native woods. His candlesticks, walking canes, letter openers, key chains, fan pulls, spindles, wine bottle toppers, and other products bear the unmistakable mark of hand craftsmanship. Wood pieces are carefully turned by lathe and polished to a high gloss using oils-- not polyurethane coating. His designs reflect a deep appreciation of the diverse textures and colors that may be found naturally in nature's design studio. No stains or dyes are used to achieve the intense coloring found in many of his pieces. He currently resides in Baton Rouge, LA.
"I find that turning wood is like fishing in the Gulf. You cast, get a good hook set, and never know what you are going to reel in.” Leopold Frilot, a self-taught wood turner, has been working with wood since 1975. His love for the craft was incubated as a young child growing up in Frilot Cove, LA, watching his father and grandfather frame houses, repair furniture, and build structures. He has pursued most areas of wood-working, including scrollsawing, furniture design, construction, and restoration, marquetry, intarsia, carpentry, and joinery. current focus is woodturning. I love to make functional pieces that are a pleasure to use, touch, and observe. I have been turning for many years now, and I am still intrigued every time I cut into a block of wood. I think of this craft as ‘encouraging the wood to express itself’; the art lies in the natural grain patterns that are unique to each species, as fingerprints are to people."
